Project Description:

"As a statewide strategy for expanding learning time in schools, New Jersey After 3 (NJ After 3) seeks a
Development Grant totaling $5 million over a three-year period through the Investing in Innovation (i3) Fund.
In this project, New Jersey After 3 will serve ten (10) persistently low-performing public schools in ?official
partner? urban districts? Camden, Newark, and Trenton. The i3 grant and matching funds will expand
learning time by more than 40% each school day for 1,500 high-need students in grades kindergarten through
eighth grade in schools that have not made Adequate Yearly Progress for three years or more. NJ After 3 will
increase the amount of time students are taught Language Arts and mathematics by teachers who are certified
in those content areas (70 minutes each school day), and will provide these lessons within a framework that
includes enrichment activities (e.g., Arts, Service Learning, Health & Fitness, Career Skills) led by trained
nonprofit afterschool educators. Combined, these activities will build students? skills in critical subjects, inject
relevance, and create opportunities for hands-on application, making school and learning more accessible and
enjoyable for students. By strengthening students? core academic skills, developing stronger student
connections to school, cultivating engagement in learning, and forging connections between students and
additional caring adult educators and mentors, NJ After 3 will lay a strong foundation in the elementary and
middle grades that ensures student participants advance on-time through high school graduation and achieve
college and career success."
